Popular Day Hike Routes Marangu Route (Mandara Hut) Elevation Gain: 1,870m to 2,720m (6,135ft to 8,920ft) Distance: ~8km round trip Hiking Time: 4-6 hours The Marangu day hike takes you through dense rainforest with chances to see colobus monkeys, exotic birds, and lush vegetation. You’ll reach Mandara Hut, a popular rest stop for multi-day trekkers, where you can enjoy views of Maundi Crater before heading back down. Machame Route (Machame Camp) Elevation Gain: 1,800m to 3,000m (5,905ft to 9,842ft) Distance: ~11km round trip Hiking Time: 5-7 hours Starting from the Machame Gate, this trail takes you through mossy rainforests filled with towering trees and abundant birdlife. The hike is moderately challenging, but the forest scenery and views are worth it. You’ll hike up to the Machame Camp before turning back. Lemosho Route (Mti Mkubwa Camp) Elevation Gain: 2,100m to 2,650m (6,890ft to 8,694ft) Distance: ~7km round trip Hiking Time: 4-6 hours The Lemosho day hike begins with a scenic drive to Londorossi Gate and a hike through beautiful forest trails with opportunities to spot wildlife such as colobus monkeys. The path takes you up to Mti Mkubwa (“Big Tree”) Camp, where you can enjoy the tranquil forest atmosphere before returning. Lunch and Rest After reaching your chosen destination, you’ll enjoy a packed lunch surrounded by the stunning forest views and serene atmosphere. Your guide will share insights about Kilimanjaro’s flora, fauna, and cultural significance. Afternoon Descent After lunch, you’ll begin your descent, retracing your steps through the rainforest. By late afternoon, you’ll return to the park gate for your transfer back to your hotel.
